A little decorating tip......

Thursday, 9-3-09

Last year when I was watching HGTV and saw them put up outdoor fabric over their pergola, I thought this was a FANTASTIC idea. I went out and bought yards and yards of fabric and then asked my wonderful mom to sew the ends (of course a bigger project then I anticipated - thanks mom!) and then asked my indulgent husband to put it up. Yeah! I loved it!! It made the deck feel so homey.
Tip #1 - If you put up fabric on your pergola, put grommets in it to let the rain run through.

Well as Summer turned into Fall, I figured out the tip they never told me on the television episode......or they were putting it up in an always dry climate. What happens when it rains?? Well the fabric fills up with rain and stretches and so you have to go out and empty all the "rain pockets" every few hours. We promptly took the fabric down for the Fall/Winter/Spring.
I am reminded of this as I wake up from a rain/lightening/thunder storm last night. I ask Elissa if she wants to go try and empty the fabric (she has found it fun to do a few times this summer). She promptly says, "No, I don't want to get wet this morning." :-)

Tip #2 - If you don't do tip #1, be sure and empty the fabric pockets from one end - not from the middle - otherwise the water will also fall on you.

Unfortunately I learned this tip from experience - as well as Elissa. I have been drenched a few times - I'm a slow learner. :-)

I LOVE HGTV, but I really need to give a little more thought before I try to follow their decorating advice.
(Elissa did a great job taking these last two pictures)

That is funny! I didn't even notice the fabric a couple of weeks ago??

It was there. The deck gets super hot if they are not up and there is obviously no shade. The colors kind of blend in. :0)
