Road trip!
Today we decided to take a "little" road trip today. We left the house at 8am so that we could have a breakfast of malasadas. We went North up thru Waimea (Parker Ranch) country to Honokaa where there is the famous Tex Drive in. Tex has THE BEST malasadas - yummy big fresh donuts of sorts.
After filling ourselves with malasadas, we headed toward Hilo and detoured a little to Akaka Falls. This is a very short, paved hike to a beautiful waterfall. Hilo is the rainy side of the island, so it within a rainforest.
A volcano vent. The volcano is still very active and flowing through lava tubes under the cooled lava on top.
We could see a little red lava in this area above.
This is the last house standing in a community called Royal Garens. It is still a bed & breakfast, but you have to be flown in or walk in. The owner can't even ride his motorcyle anymore. His house was almost destroyed as recently as February of this year. I don't think I would stay there. :-)
A bird's eye view of the B&B in nowhere land.
This is a patch of forest surrounded by cooled lava and was smoldering from the lava flowing beneath it. It errupted in flames as we were flying over it. Very cool!
Patty and I were sick by this time. I think I was because I kept on having to look down at Zach and talk to him. I didn't get sick the last time we rode one on our honeymoon, but this time I sure did.
Elissa was a little scared when we started, but then she was having a good time and asking the pilot questions.
When all is said and done, I wouldn't do a helicopter ride again. I would do the lava boat tours instead. I wanted to see lava flows, not just the island and lava fields.
Also, the car ride is long. Zach was having a hard day today and we had a hard time keeping him happy. He kept on saying he wanted to go back to our real home on Lake Tapps. We left at 8am and got home at 5pm. On the way home we stopped at the Parker Ranch shopping area and had a late lunch and early dinner.
We won't go on a road trip any time soon again, but it was definitely a family trip we will remember!

Zach had a good time and asked the pilot a couple of questions too. "What killed the trees? What killed the house?" The pilot was a little impatient with the kids unfortunately, but they didn't realize it. Zach was not in as much awe as I thought he would be. He wasn't hooting and hollering. He was pretty laid back.
